Making sense of catastrophic AI risk

12:45 – 13:45

Open/Restricted: Open

Description: Recent developments in advanced AI have raised concerns about the pace of AI development, increasing autonomy, and whether current methods for evaluating and overseeing these systems are adequate. The aim of the meeting is to introduce these broader AI safety concerns to the evidence synthesis community, whose expertise in research methods and evaluation may be relevant to addressing some of these challenges.

The discussion would begin with a short introduction to catastrophic AI risks, followed by examples from current research on LLM evaluation, including mechanisms that can cause judgements to vary across repeated runs or appear repeatable while remaining misleading. These examples would provide a starting point for discussing how evaluation and human oversight may become more difficult as AI systems become increasingly capable and autonomous.

A facilitated group discussion would follow about how evidence synthesis methods could contribute to AI safety research, what gaps may exist in current evaluation approaches, and how interested researchers could become involved.
